The Cornerstone Project
The Need
The long-term effects of the criminal justice system on Texas teens are multifaceted, encompassing issues such as incarceration rates, reform initiatives, and the impact on communities. Texas has experienced various policy and legislative efforts aimed at addressing crime and the associated implications for young individuals. The criminal justice system's long-term effects on Texas teens have been influenced by the state's historical approach to justice, the implementation of criminal justice reforms, and the impact on vulnerable populations, including juveniles [See sources below].
The Solution
The Cornerstone Project is a new partnership with the Texas Juvenile Justice Department to provide Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), mentorship, drug counseling, and wrap-around service to formerly incarcerated Texas teens. DBT has shown promise in reducing criminal recidivism among teens throughout Texas. DBT techniques can help young individuals develop emotional regulation skills, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and mindfulness, which are crucial in making positive choices and managing challenging situations. By addressing underlying emotional and behavioral issues, DBT can assist teens in avoiding criminal behavior, breaking the cycle of recidivism, and fostering positive personal growth and decision-making.
